Load-balancing solutions for static routing schemes in ATM networks

چکیده
In this paper, we present two diierent path ordering algorithms whose aim is balancing the load among network links when used in conjunction with static routing algorithms. Both algorithms have the same aim, but use diierent heuristics to obtain it. A new formalism based on set theory is deened in order to allow a formal description of the two algorithms. The rst selection criterion we deene tries, as a general rule, to allocate the shortest paths rst, thus aiming at reducing bandwidth waste due to routing over long paths. The second one attemps to allocate paths for every source-destination pair, trying to assign the primary paths rst, then the alternate ones. We compare the two routing schemes by simulating them in both simple and complex topologies, using ANCLES (ATM Networks Cell LEvel Simulator), a tool developed by the Electronic Department of Politecnico di Torino in cooperation with CSELT (Telecom Italia Reseach Center). Performance metrics comprise the global network call blocking probability and the load balancing between links. Results are compared with those obtained by routing without load balancing.

Interference-aware Load Balancing for Multihop Wireless Networks
Load balancing is critical for improving performance in wireless mesh networks. The unique characteristics of mesh networks, such as static nodes and the shared nature of the wireless medium, invalidate existing solutions from both wired and wireless networks and introduce new challenges for providing load balancing. In this paper, we focus on addressing these challenges. We first formulate the...
متن کاملInsensitive versus efficient dynamic load balancing in networks without blocking
So-called Whittle networks have recently been shown to give tight approximations for the performance of non-locally balanced networks with blocking, including practical routing policies such as joining the shortest queue. In the present paper, we turn the attention to networks without blocking. To this end, we consider a set of “insensitive” dynamic load balancing schemes preserving the structu...
متن کاملA Management System for Load Balancing through Adaptive Routing in Multi-Service ATM Networks
This paper proposes a hierarchical approach to the routing issue in ATM-based broadband multi-service networks. We show how distributed Route Selection Algorithms embedded within network nodes may be managed by a TMN system, by virtue of a management service called Load Balancing, to increase their adaptivity to network wide conditions and therefore their effectiveness. The paper elaborates on ...

متن کاملQoS-Aware Routing Schemes Based on Hierarchical Load-Balancing for Integrated Services Packet Networks
This paper presents a load balancing method to improve network utilization when static routing algorithms are employed. Static routing algorithms can generally be reduced to a path assignment problem with the aim of minimizing a cost function: i.e., maximizing network revenues. Unfortunately the problem, when multiple constraints such as different QoS traffic classes are present, is computation...
